An Interview with the Author

Interviewer:  Welcome to the interview.

VM: Thank you for the opportunity to talk with you.

Interviewer: Your new book is called “Magenta”.  What is it about?

VM:  The title doesn’t give much away apart from causing you to wonder about the book.  As the story progresses the reason for the title becomes obvious.

Interviewer:  So it is something of a mystery?

VM:  Yes, but there is another question as well.   The main characters have their own personal decisions to make and this gradually unfolds throughout the story.  So it is also a story about relationships.  Or romance.

Interviewer: Where is the story based?

VM: The novel starts in Sydney but turns into a road trip to the north and west of Australia.  It gives me the opportunity to take readers to Darwin and across the Top end to the Kimberley region.  Then down the west coast to the Margaret River wineries.  That was an enjoyable part of the research.

Interviewer:  From the book you seem to have an interest in the history of the country?

VM:  Yes, at both an individual level and at a national level our history affects who and what we are.  I try to give the reader a taste of the history and cultures of the country that appear in the story.  Often so much of the history, the land and the culture is overlooked.

Interviewer:  What do you want to achieve with this book.

VM: I would like the reader to reach the end of the book and say “I enjoyed that, I discovered something I didn’t know, and it gave me a few things to think about.”  That would be my reward.

Interviewer:  Thank you for your time.

VM:  Thank you.
