More Jots and Sods

William Shakespeare and Barcaldine in Western Queensland

wouldn’t seem to have a great deal in common.

However there is a connection.

Read “The Letter” and find the link.

In 2017 Cyclone Debbie came out of the Coral Sea leaving a trail of damage on the mainland of Australia and its offshore islands.
It was in the Coral Sea, in May 1942, that the battle between the Japanese Imperial Navy and the Allied naval forces of USA and Australia fought an indecisive battle that marked the turning point of the war in the Pacific. Unlike Debbie, the Japanese forces turned back to the north.
In the battle, neither side’s ships ever sighted or fired upon, the opposition’s ships. It was the first battle where the attacks were carried out by carrier-based aircraft rather than by big naval guns. (The Letter)

As a nation Australia has been very fortunate and has never experienced either civil war or foreign armies fighting across the country.

However, there was a very brief uprising in which a British military force fired on and killed at least twenty-seven Australians.

A flag, reportedly designed by a Canadian,  was raised by the rebels, and can still be seen today.  The Eureka flag has a dark blue background ,a vertical and a horizontal line with five stars representing the Southern Cross (Crux Australis).  (The Disappearance of Merry)
